How Safe is Botox and How Does it Work?

Botox was originally approved for the treatment of eye muscle disorders in 1989. However, a combination of its safe, continued track record and impressive effect on relaxing facial wrinkles and lines has made it the most popular cosmetic procedure since the FDA approved it for cosmetic use in 2002. Quite a few celebrities have turned to Botox use in order to preserve their youthful appearances without the need for “going under the knife”, including such big names as Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, Simon Cowell, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox.

How Botox Works

Over time, skin loses its pliability, and creases and wrinkles develop where consistent and prolonged facial movements are made. Squinting causes lines, or crow’s feet, at the outer corners of the eyes while concentrating causes wrinkles in the forehead and smiling and frowning cause lines to form around the mouth.

Botox works by blocking the impulses of nerves that cause muscles to contract and, thus, form wrinkles. Because targeted muscles are relaxed by Botox injections, lines soften and those areas smooth out creating a more youthful appearance. As Botox treatments are continued, the targeted muscles are actually trained to relax and wrinkles become less severe over time.

More recently, Botox has been found to be effective at restoring the aesthetic arch to drooping eyebrows as well as removing wrinkles and lines. Botox is also used for non-cosmetic procedures such as relieving pain (like migraine headaches) and eliminating hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating).

Botox Application and Treatment

Botox treatments are incredibly fast and easy, requiring only a local anesthesia and from between 5 to 30 minutes to perform injections depending on the range of treatments desired. The application of Botox is performed by using a fine needle that is inserted into the targeted muscle group with little discomfort. Slight bruising may occur, but it can be minimized by ceasing to use anti-inflammatory medications and aspirin approximately two weeks prior to Botox treatment. Also, it has been found that men normally require higher doses of Botox than women to obtain desired results from the cosmetic procedure.

The results of Botox treatments are temporary, lasting only from between four to six months and, therefore, need to be repeated as lines gradually reappear. However, as treatments are progressively made, facial muscles more permanently relax due to non-use. Although the effects of Botox treatments don’t last as long as surgical procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and facelifts, they are faster, less expensive and require no down time.
